Nature and Knots: An Artistic Dialogue Between Humans and the Earth

Updated: Aug 8

As you step into the serene ambiance of Galerie Sara Lily Perez, you are embraced by the earthy fragrance of natural fibers. This is "Natural Ethos," an exhibition that promises not just to display art but to immerse you in a profound dialogue between nature, identity, and sustainability.

The space is warm and inviting, where it's easy to feel a sense of interconnectedness from the outset. The works of Mădălina Urs-Suciu, Aziya, and Dörte Bundt are thoughtfully arranged, each piece resonating with the theme of self-reliance and the symbiotic relationship between humans and the natural world.

Mădălina Urs-Suciu's "Post Melancholy Series" is the first to catch your eye. Urs-Suciu explores the symbolic and mystical dimensions of everyday urban plants, focusing on their state of 'becoming' and subtle, undiscovered beauty. She juxtaposes plant leaves against empty skies or celestial elements, creating a sense of monumentality and mysticism, hoping to inspire reflection and appreciation for nature. Her works are not mere botanical representations but carry symbolic dimensions, appearing quasi-real with imagined elements. Urs-Suciu manipulates scale, proportion, and perspective to depict plants as monuments of nature, using a classic style with dramatic lighting and a limited color palette to evoke emotions and highlight nature's timeless beauty. In a consumer-driven world, she seeks to re-mystify the natural world, inspiring a renewed connection to and protection of the environment.

Contrasting and connecting with the natural elements are Aziya's powerful portraits of human nature. Placed in the center of the canvas, the women exude confidence, dignity, and a nuanced vulnerability. Her abstract figurative style blends brushstrokes with natural landscapes, drawing parallels between women and Mother Nature. Through vibrant colors and soft strokes, she portrays femininity as a natural force, perpetually renewed and connected to the environment. Her portraits invite us to explore the strength that comes from harmony with nature. These portraits are not just images: they are invitations to explore the profound strength that comes from living in harmony with the natural world. As a feminist artist, Aziya's work is a visual ode to the stories that lie within each woman's soul, creating spaces in which their voices resonate and their narratives unfold.

Dörte Bundt Standing next to Cascadia

Tying the themes of the previous artists together are Dörte Bundt's intricate macramé pieces with their knots. Each piece is delicately hand-knotted with soft recycled cotton rope, with Dörte's technique playing with the formation of empty space. Inspired by the deep symbolism inherent in portal design, Bundt's tapestries make you feel at home but transcend simple decoration. They serve as everyday beacons, leading us to think about the sustainability of materials and our need to reknit with nature. Dörte's work blends traditional techniques such as knotting and weaving with contemporary creativity, redefining textures and emotions in the realm of fiber arts.

As you traverse the exhibition, the cohesive narrative of "Natural Ethos" becomes clear. Each artist, through her unique medium, illustrates the necessity of sustainable living and self-reliance. The artworks do not simply depict nature; they embody the delicate balance required to sustain human life and the planet. The gallery encourages you to reflect on your own relationship with nature, to think about the ways in which you can contribute to the preservation and appreciation of the natural world.

By the time you reach the end of the gallery, you feel a renewed sense of commitment to sustainable practices, inspired by the resilience and beauty depicted in the works around you. "Natural Ethos" is more than an exhibition; it is a call to action, a reminder that our connection to nature is not just about survival but about thriving together in harmony. As you step back out into the world, the themes of the exhibition linger, urging you to carry forward the ethos of sustainability and self-reliance, much like the art that has touched your soul.
